Clarks Originals Men's Desert BootClarks Originals Men's Desert Boot
Buy new: $72.00 - $125.00
A nice pair of casual boots is a fine substitute for casual shoes like sneakers if you're so inclined. Desert boots are a popular choice because they're classic, good-looking, and comfortable as all get out.
Florsheim Men's Lexington OxfordFlorsheim Men's Lexington Oxford
Buy new: $69.99 - $109.99
Dress shoes don't have to be painful foot killers. The more you pay, the better shoe you'll get (and as you find what you like, I suggest you *do* pay more for a nicer shoe), but these Florsheim captoe Oxfords are a good start. They'll be comfy and look sharp. If you're not feeling the black, you might want to grab a similar shoe in brown.
Levi's Men's 501 JeanLevi's Men's 501 Jean
Buy new: $10.49 - $68.00
If you have any jeans that say "relaxed," "baggy," or any other synonym of "loose," burn them (or, more preferably, donate them to a good cause). Instead, buy a pair of nice fitting, straight legged jeans. Levi's 501's are a great choice that match affordability with good fit and durability.
Levi's Men's 517 Boot Cut JeanLevi's Men's 517 Boot Cut Jean
Buy new: $39.99 - $45.99
The prevailing fashion today is straight legged jeans, but I still contend that if you have a bit of a gut (as I do), you can do worse things to your shape than wear a pair of mildly boot-cut jeans (I don't mean flares or bell-bottoms — boot-cut). The slight flare on the bottom will help balance the shape of your body. These Levi's 517 jeans are an excellent choice for both fit and quality.
Armani Exchange Pima V-Neck TeeArmani Exchange Pima V-Neck Tee
Buy new: $15.00 - $25.00
You should probably throw away most of the t-shirts you currently own. Just do it. Don't think about it; just grab them all and stuff them in a Goodwill bin. To replace them, get some nice, quality v-necks and crewnecks. To start, I suggest a few v-necks. They hide better under other clothes and look classier when you wear it by itself (or under a jacker).
Kenneth Cole Reaction Men's Spread Collar Tonal Solid Woven ShirtKenneth Cole Reaction Men's Spread Collar Tonal Solid Woven Shirt
Buy new: $29.99 - $39.99
When getting a dress shirt, it's essential to get *the right size*! If you don't know your size (or all of your shirts make you look like a pirate), then go and get sized. This Kenneth Cole shirt is nice and affordable. If this is your first shirt, choose white or a light blue. White goes with more, but if you're pale, blue will make you look better.
Dockers Men's Prescot Flat Front Dress PantDockers Men's Prescot Flat Front Dress Pant
Buy new: $39.99
There are just two things you need to keep in mind when shopping for fancier pants: your size (your real size, which you can get from a department store) and flat front. *Most* men don't need the pleats. These Docker's pants are a great first choice. They are not the most progressive choice, but you pay a lot for "better" cut pants (if you want modern, then I suggest Ted Baker or Thomas Pink).
Dockers Men's Signature Khaki D2 Straight Fit Flat Front PantDockers Men's Signature Khaki D2 Straight Fit Flat Front Pant
Buy new: $36.99 - $39.99
If you want to look nicer but don't really want to deal with fussy dress pants, a set of really sharp khakis can substitute for many situations (though a big meeting with the board of directors might not be a good fit). These Docker's D2's are a good choice for most men. If you're a slimmer build, hunt down the D1's (just search Docker's D1 on Amazon); they're a much slimmer cut.
Dockers Men's 2 Button Single Breasted BlazerDockers Men's 2 Button Single Breasted Blazer
If your tastes tend towards the more traditional, this blazer (yes, a real blazer, not a sports coat called a blazer!) is a good choice. I tend to shy away from these sorts of things, but then again, I'm a 20-something male in a hot climate. If you're living up north and are a little older or conservative, this a good choice for you.
Calvin Klein Men's Malte Satin Solid Slim TieCalvin Klein Men's Malte Satin Solid Slim Tie
If you're a slimmer build, then these slim ties are a good choice. While slimmer is good, beware of "super skinny" or "ultra slim" ties; they look like you tied your sister's hair ribbon around your neck. You want something that's proportional to your build that doesn't look oversized but also doesn't look like a shoestring.
Solid Silk Pocket SquareSolid Silk Pocket Square
If a tie is too stuffy for your environment, then a pocket square is a perfect choice to add a little pop. These silk ones from Jos A. Bank are beautiful; choose your favorite color and tuck it in your lapel pocket. These are $18, but if you hunt around, you can often find them *very* on sale (I bought a bunch for $1 the other day!).
